The verdict, reached in Central Islip on Friday, comes nearly six years after Donna Cipley said officers forcibly removed her from her house on March 12, 2019, wearing nothing but a pajama bottom and a tank top despite the cold. In a news release at the time, police said officers went to her home because she was wanted for criminal contempt and that she hit one with a door and bent back a detective's thumb. She was charged with second-degree assault and resisting arrest. Those charges were later dropped, her attorney said. “This is a long-awaited vindication of this grandmother’s rights," said Cipley's attorney, Frederick K. Brewington. "Finally, after attacking her in her own home, parading her before cameras in handcuffs and charging her with crimes she did not commit, she has seen just a small bit of justice.” Oscar Michelen, the lead attorney for the county and the police officers, said the defendants had done nothing wrong and that the county would fight the verdict. "We believe that the amount awarded for the false arrest was excessive, and that even the false arrest finding will eventually be overturned on appeal," he told Newsday. Cipley, who was in her early 60s at the time of the arrest, claimed in her suit that Nassau officers had started harassing her family after her son, who had been hospitalized for a drug overdose in 2018, refused to become a police informant. She alleged that detectives visited her home, shining lights in the windows and ringing the doorbell. She also said in her suit that "at no point" was she ever "the subject of a criminal contempt charge." After her charges were dimissed in October 2019, Cipley filed her civil rights lawsuit in 2020 . She accused six officers of abuse, but Brewington and Michelen confirmed that the jury on Friday found only two officers, Det. Michael Mazzara and Det. Basil Gomez, liable. Cipley's original complaint accused the defendants of allegations including assault, battery, false arrest and malicious prosecution. The jury found the officers liable only for the false arrest, according to the attorneys. In October, a federal jury in Brooklyn awarded more than $2.3 million dollars to Robert Besedin Sr. , an Air Force veteran from Baldwin who alleged two Nassau County police officers threw him down concrete stairs during an encounter at his home in 2017. Newsday previously reported that there were 75 settlements or jury awards for lawsuits alleging police or prosecutorial misconduct between 2000 and January 2023 on Long Island, costing taxpayers at least $165 million.

(AP) — Michigan gave athletic director Warde Manuel a five-year contract extension Thursday on the heels of the Wolverines' upset over rival Ohio State and a strong start to the basketball season. All Stena Line ferries due to sail from Belfast to Cairnryan – and vice versa – have thus far been cancelled on Saturday, apart from the 7.30pm and the 11.30pm routes. The public being are warned by the Met Office of the potential for travel disruption, damage to buildings, power cuts, and even a threat to life. Two yellow weather warnings were issued by the national forecaster on Friday. A yellow warning for wind began at 3pm and is lasting until 6am on Sunday. There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, falling trees and a small chance of power cuts, with the potential for danger to life in coastal areas or from flying debris. Separately, a yellow warning for rain also began at 3pm and is due to finish at 12 noon on Saturday. There is a slight chance that homes and buildings could be flooded, while there may be delays to transport if roads become overly saturated. The most serious warning is an amber alert for "potentially damaging winds", which is set to be in place between 1am and 9pm on Saturday. Gusts of up to 70 to 80mph are expected around coastal areas while inland winds could reach 60 to 70mph. Damage to buildings is possible with the potential for roofs to be blown off and power lines to be brought down. The explosion Friday near the town of Zubin Potok, which sits in an ethnic Serb-dominated area in Kosovo's troubled north, damaged a canal that supplies water to hundreds of thousands of people and cooling systems at two coal-fired power plants that generate most of Kosovo's electricity. As security forces swarmed the area around the canal, whose concrete walls were left with a gaping hole gushing water, Prime Minister Albin Kurti visited the site and announced authorities had arrested several people. Law enforcement "carried out searches" and "collected testimony and evidence, and the criminals and terrorists will have to face justice and the law," he said. The arrests follow a security meeting late Friday, when Kurti pointed the finger at Serbia. "The attack was carried out by professionals. We believe it comes from gangs directed by Serbia," he told a press conference, without providing evidence. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic hit back Saturday, denying the "irresponsible" and "baseless accusations". "Such unfounded claims are aimed to tarnish Serbia's reputation, as well as to undermine efforts to promote peace and stability in the region," he said in a statement to AFP. Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric had earlier suggested on X that the Kosovar "regime" could itself be behind the blast, calling for an international investigation.
