The apparent assassination of UnitedHealthcare Chief Executive Brian Thompson on a Midtown Manhattan sidewalk Wednesday has unleashed an extraordinary outpouring of emotion. But it’s not all horror or sadness over a 50-year-old father of two being shot dead in public by a man in a mask. Thompson’s death has inspired a torrent of fury about the way his insurance company and others treat — or mistreat — people in their moments of greatest need. Some of the reactions, particularly on social media, have been downright gleeful about the killing. What a stunning illustration of the hatred so many Americans feel toward for-profit health insurance companies, which too often make money for stockholders by withholding care from sick people. UnitedHealthcare is a particularly awful exemplar. It is infamous for high denial rates and low reimbursement levels. According to an investigation by the medical news site Stat and a federal lawsuit recently filed in Minnesota, UnitedHealthcare has been using a deeply flawed artificial intelligence algorithm to wrongfully deny healthcare to elderly and disabled patients. Stat reported that the company “pressured its medical staff to cut off payments for seriously ill patients ... denying rehabilitation care for older and disabled Americans as profits soared.” ProPublica reported last month that the company was using algorithms to identify people it deemed guilty of “therapy overuse” and deny mental health treatment. Both California and Massachusetts determined that the company was breaking the federal law that requires insurers to cover mental health issues the same way they cover physical ailments. UnitedHealthcare denied claims for more than 34,000 therapy sessions from 2013 to 2020 in New York alone, saving the company about $8 million. Adding to this unsavory picture, four of its top executives, including Thompson, have been under scrutiny for $101.5 million in stock trades they made after the company was informed that it was the target of a federal antitrust investigation but before the news became public and the stock price dropped. Perhaps all this helps explain why, as of Friday morning, more than 85,000 people had reacted to UnitedHealthcare’s solemn Facebook statement about Thompson’s death with a laugh emoji . People on other social media platforms also piled on. “All human life is sacred, so it’s not proper to laugh when serious harm befalls someone,” wrote one Bluesky user . “The moral thing to do is instead charge them hundreds of thousands of dollars.” “UnitedHealth CEO meets the same fate as many of his clients,” posted another Bluesky user above photos of the shooter pointing his gun at Thompson’s back before he reportedly rode off on an e-bike. Stories of terrible interactions with the largest health insurer in the country also poured forth. Elizabeth Austin, a single mother who lives in Bucks County, Pa., told me she had a miserable experience with UnitedHealthcare after her young daughter, Carolyn, was diagnosed with leukemia during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her chemotherapy caused nausea, so Carolyn’s doctor ordered a nighttime feeding tube to supplement what little she was able to eat while awake. She said United Healthcare wouldn’t pay for the feeding tube unless Carolyn ate no solid food at all. “I was like, ‘She’s 9! She wants to eat food!’” Austin told me. Unmoved, the insurer forced Austin to pay $900 a month out of pocket for the device. Later, when Carolyn developed a sensitivity to a sedative used during her monthly lumbar punctures, her doctors switched to another medicine, and the company again denied payment, Austin said. She paid for that herself too. Austin said she eventually developed a stress-related heart condition that required ablation surgery. She and her daughter are healthy now, but the scars remain. She said she was saddened but not shocked to learn about Thompson’s death. “These things are happening because people are really struggling,” she told me. “I don’t think the CEO was responsible for my daughter’s caregiving issues, but it’s smart to ask, ‘Why did this happen?’ Could it be a systemic issue?’ People are buckling under the pressure.” At this point, the motive for Thompson’s killing is a matter of speculation. But ammunition recovered from the scene was inscribed with words often used to describe insurance companies’ anti-patient strategies, including “deny” and “defend,” the Associated Press and others reported. In the 2010 book “ Delay, Deny, Defend : Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It,” Jay M. Feinman, a Rutgers law professor, traces the evolution of insurance companies from generally helpful organizations where adjusters — that is, human beings — were responsible for reimbursements into the antagonistic, algorithm-driven behemoths they are today. In the 1990s, he writes, insurance companies such as Allstate turned to the consulting firm McKinsey & Co. to develop new strategies. “McKinsey,” Feinman writes, “saw claims as a ‘zero-sum game,’ with the policyholder and the company competing for the same dollars. No longer would each claim be treated on its merits.” Computers would determine reimbursements, and settlements would be offered on a “take-it-or-litigate basis.” Feinman writes that McKinsey urged Allstate to move “from ‘Good Hands’ to ‘Boxing Gloves.’” Earlier this year, the insurance giant Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield announced that it would start limiting reimbursements for anesthesia based on its own time limits for surgeries. The idea, Anthem said, was to prevent overbilling. Doctors, predictably, were outraged. “This is just the latest in a long line of appalling behavior by commercial health insurers looking to drive their profits up at the expense of patients and physicians providing essential care,” Donald Arnold, the president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, told NPR . On Thursday, after the outpouring of rage against health insurers sparked by Thompson’s killing, Anthem reversed course , blaming “significant widespread misinformation” about its proposed policy for the about-face. No wonder there is so little empathy for Brian Thompson, who was by many accounts a lovely human being . It has been a turbulent week for international traders, with the French government toppled in a vote of no confidence, plunging the euro zone’s second-largest economy into a period of deep political uncertainty. Coming on the back of a stalled German economy in a political stalemate with snap elections coming in February, it has created a very uncertain outlook for Irish exporters as they survey their sales options in their two largest European markets. The OECD last Wednesday cut its forecast for German economic growth next year. Deutsche Banks’s CEO, Christian Fleming at a banking summit in London during the week said Germany needs to adjust its business model, calling for less regulation and lower taxes on business. The political dispute which tipped President Macron‘s premier Michel Barnier over the edge, rejecting the 2025 annual budget, suggests it will now be even harder to address the country’s economic woes. With a deficit of over 6% of GDP, France already has the worst budget imbalance in the eurozone. Irish exporters were firing on all cylinders throughout 2024, with exports in September, being the highest monthly on record. Many were hoping for a stable European market, to counter the likelihood of tariffs damaging trade with the important US market. Many other exporters, however, are quietly euphoric about President Trump’s plans to cut taxes and lighten regulation and are banking on the continued rapid expansion of Irish goods exports to the market, which raced ahead by a whopping 64 % in September. Ireland is not the only country to have gained from the increases in cross-border trading in the past year. The United Nations (UNCTAD) announced last week that world trade is about to reach a record in 2024, breaking through the $3tr mark. They indicate that the increase is largely determined by the increase in trade in services, in which Ireland excels, and which accounted for half of the global growth. However, the UN report points to uncertainty looming over 2025, amid risks of trade wars and ongoing political turmoil in many markets. In particular, they point to potential US trade policy shifts under the Trump administration, including the much-projected tariff increases. Such measures they state risk triggering retaliation, with ripples affecting industries and economies along the supply chain. Of particular concern, and reinforced by the UN report, is the statement that countries most exposed to changes in US policy changes are likely to be those with large trade surpluses with the US. Based on the latest statistics Ireland is one of the top five countries in terms of goods trade surpluses, which is expected to exceed €47bn in the current year. The fact that Ireland buys more from the US in computer and business services, appears not to be recognised by Mr Trump's choice for commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, stating on the pre-election campaign trail that it's "nonsense that Ireland of all places runs a trade surplus at our expense...when we end this nonsense, America will be a truly great country again". Most annoying is that Lutnick should know better, with his background in selling services internationally from his Irish-based company Cantor Fitzgerald. The big technology companies, including Apple, Intel, Amazon, Facebook and Google, that have driven much of Ireland’s exports across this and prior years, may have been hoping to get an easy ride under Trump. But, they may be mistaken, judging by his statement on his social media platform Truth Social, that Big Tech has run wild for years, suggests he wants to keep pursuing them with antitrust crackdowns. The common refrain amongst executives is that what happens in politics and what happens in business, are not the same thing. But, there is no doubt that an outbreak of political tranquillity in Germany and France would be helpful for European and Irish businesses. In the US, the post-Trump election jump in the stock market has benefited a wide range of companies, both in Ireland and internationally, despite the more outlandish statements of the US political leader. As the search for UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s killer goes on, investigators are reckoning with a tantalizing dichotomy: They have troves of evidence, but the shooter remains an enigma. Police don’t know who he is, where he is, or why he did it, though they are confident it was a targeted attack instead of a random act. “The net is tightening,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Saturday. Hours after he spoke, police divers were seen searching a pond in Central Park, where the killer fled after the shooting. The first shows him outside the vehicle and the second shows him looking through the partition between the back seat and the front of the cab. In both, his face is partially obscured by a blue, medical-style mask. Retracing the gunman’s steps using surveillance video, police say, it appears he left the city by bus soon after the shooting Wednesday morning outside the New York Hilton Midtown. He was seen on video at an uptown bus station about 45 minutes later, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said. With the high-profile search expanding across state lines, the FBI announced late Friday that it was offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, adding to a reward of up to $10,000 that the NYPD has offered. Police say they believe the suspect acted alone. Police provided no updates on the hunt Saturday, but investigators are urging patience — even with a killer on the loose. Hundreds of detectives are combing through video recordings and social media, vetting tips from the public and interviewing people who might have information, including Thompson’s family and coworkers and the shooter’s randomly assigned roommates at the Manhattan hostel where he stayed. “This isn’t ‘Blue Bloods.’ We’re not going to solve this in 60 minutes," Kenny told reporters Friday. “We’re painstakingly going through every bit of evidence that we can come across.” The shooter paid cash at the hostel, presented what police believe was a fake ID and is believed to have paid cash for taxi rides and other transactions. He didn't speak to others at the hostel and almost always kept his face covered with a mask, only lowering it while eating. But investigators caught a break when they came across security camera images of an unguarded moment in which he briefly showed his face soon after arriving in New York on Nov. 24. Police distributed the images to news outlets and on social media but so far haven't been able to ID him using facial recognition — possibly because of the angle of the images or limitations on how the NYPD is allowed to use that technology, Kenny said. On Friday evening, investigators found a backpack in Central Park that had been worn by the gunman, police said. They didn’t immediately reveal what, if anything, it contained but said it would be tested and analyzed. Another potential clue, a fingerprint on an item he purchased at a Starbucks minutes before the shooting, has so far proven useless for identifying him, Kenny said. Aided by surveillance cameras on nearly every building and block, police have been able to retrace the shooter’s movements. They know he ambushed Thompson at 6:44 a.m. as the executive arrived at the Hilton for his company’s annual investor conference, using a 9 mm pistol that resembled the guns farmers use to put down animals without causing a loud noise. They know ammunition found near Thompson’s body bore the words “delay,” “deny” and “depose,” mimicking a phrase used by insurance industry critics . Kenny said the fact that the shooter knew UnitedHealthcare group was holding a conference at the hotel and what route Thompson might take to get there suggested that he could possibly be a disgruntled employee or client. Investigators know from surveillance video that the shooter fled into Central Park on a bicycle and ditched it around 7 a.m. near 85th Street. He then walked a couple blocks and got into a taxi, arriving at 7:30 a.m. at the George Washington Bridge Bus Station, which is near the northern tip of Manhattan and offers commuter service to New Jersey and Greyhound routes to Philadelphia, Boston and Washington. Investigators don't know what happened next. They are searching through more surveillance video but have yet to locate video of the shooter getting on a bus or exiting the station. “We have reason to believe that the person in question has left New York City,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told CNN on Friday. Police have determined from video that the gunman was in the city for 10 days before the shooting. He arrived at Manhattan’s main bus terminal on a Greyhound bus that originated in Atlanta, though it's not clear whether he embarked there or at one of about a half-dozen stops along the route. Immediately after that, he took a cab to the vicinity of the Hilton and was there for about a half hour, Kenny said. At around 11 p.m. on the night he arrived, he went by taxi to the HI New York City Hostel. It was there, while speaking with an employee in the lobby, that he briefly pulled down the mask and smiled, giving investigators the brief glimpse they are now relying on to identify and capture a killer. NASHVILLE — If misery loves company, the Jacksonville Jaguars made sure they have just that at the bottom of the AFC South. Even better? The Tennessee Titans sit below them now in the standings thanks to the Jaguars' second win in three trips to Music City. Tank Bigsby ran for an 8-yard touchdown with 6:46 left and Jacksonville snapped a five-game skid and ended the Titans' slim playoff hopes Sunday by scoring the final 10 points for a 10-6 victory. The Jaguars (3-10) came in already eliminated with Trevor Lawrence out for the rest of this season. This is a town where the Jaguars left with only one win in 10 trips before Sunday. These Jaguars also hadn't won any game since Oct. 20. “It’s sort of a relief, right?" Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said of the locker room after the win. "You know, it’s the excitement. It’s the joy of the work that you put in. And you’re finally rewarded.” The Titans (3-10) came in needing to win out to even have a chance of their first playoff berth since the 2021 season ended with a divisional loss on their home field. Tennessee has fired both a general manager and coach since then. The Titans had two late chances to win. “It’s one that we definitely feel like we should have won, could have won and had opportunities to win,” Titans quarterback Will Levis said. Their best chance ended with 1:11 left as Levis missed Nick Westbrook-Ikhine in the end zone on fourth-and-3 at the Jaguars 9. The second ended with Levis missing Tyler Boyd on fourth-and-15 from the Tennessee 35 with 28 seconds remaining. Mac Jones filled in ably enough for Lawrence to get his first win in three starts this season. He shook off two interceptions and one sack, throwing for 220 yards. In the second half, he connected over and over with rookie Brian Thomas Jr. The first-round draft pick out of LSU finished with career highs with eight catches on 12 targets for 86 yards. “We didn’t quit this time, which is really important for us moving forward," Jones said of the Jaguars. "There was no quit.” Pederson also said there was no panic or finger-pointing, just subtle adjustments. “That’s one thing about Mac,” Pederson said of his quarterback. "I mean, he just sticks to it. He grinds it out.” Cam Little started the Jaguars' comeback in the low-scoring affair with a 23-yard field goal early in the fourth. Nick Folk kicked a pair of field goals for the Titans. Tennessee dropped to 1-5 at home this season under first-year coach Brian Callahan, who put this loss on the inability to score on two red zone trips. “That’s the difference in a tight ball game in a divisional game," Callahan said. Tennessee couldn't get points off either turnover against the NFL's worst defense in yards allowed and next to worst in points given up per game. Missing three starters with injuries, the Titans couldn't stop the Jags in the fourth quarter. “I’m tired of saying we’ve got to do better, play better,” Titans two-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons said. “I don’t know. I don’t have no answers. Complementary football wasn’t there.” Sit down The Titans scratched rookie Jha’Quan Jackson who has five fumbles this season, including one of each of the past two weeks.
