WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump’s announcement of tariff plans sparked criticism Tuesday from Mexico, Canada and China and raised questions about whether the moves would violate international trade agreements — including one he renegotiated in his first term. Trump posted on social media Monday that as “one of my many first Executive Orders” he would impose a 25 percent tariff on all imports from Mexico and Canada and a 10% additional tariff on China. He said the tariffs are in response to the ongoing fentanyl epidemic, crime and illegal immigration. More than 90% of intercepted fentanyl trafficked by cartels is found at ports of entry, primarily in vehicles driven by U.S. citizens, according to Customs and Border Protection. “As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before,” Trump posted. “This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!” “Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem. The latest development came hours after thousands of Khan supporters, defying government warnings, broke through a barrier of shipping containers blocking off Islamabad and entered a high-security zone, where they clashed with security forces, facing tear gas shelling, mass detentions and gunfire. Tension has been high in Islamabad since Sunday when supporters of the former prime minister began a “long march” from the restive northwest to demand his release. Khan has been in a prison for over a year and faces more than 150 criminal cases that his party says are politically motivated. Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, led the protest, but she fled as police pushed back against demonstrators. Hundreds of Khan’s supporters are being arrested in the ongoing nighttime operation, and police are also seeking to arrest Bibi. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi told reporters that the Red Zone, which houses government buildings and embassies, and the surrounding areas have been cleared. Leaders from Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, or PTI, have also fled the protest site. Earlier Tuesday, Pakistan’s army took control of D-Chowk, a large square in the Red Zone, where visiting Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is staying. Such was the response to his rabble-rousing speeches from the people that there were requests from the BJP candidates in other adjacent constituencies for his campaign,” said a Jana Sena Party leader on condition of anonymity. The way Pawan Kalyan propagated the concepts of Sanatan Dharma, nationalism combined with regionalism and spirit of Shivaji Maharaj, supported abrogation of Article 370 and raised slogans such as “Jai Bhavani, Jai Shivaji,” projected him as a true symbol of the right-wing ideology. So, the BJP wants to make use of Pawan Kalyan to carry its message to the grassroots,” he said. There is no guarantee that his new brand image of Sanatani will get traction from the Kapu community in the next elections, analysts added. “However, the clout Pawan Kalyan has created as a Sanatani helps him as a highly reliable friend among the NDA partners. Maharashtra results brought name and fame to him at a national level. It will be interesting to see whether this new image will fetch him any electoral gains in Andhra Pradesh,” Suravajjula added.

Evolv, the company behind a controversial “artificial intelligence” system used to detect guns on New York subways and in schools across the country, has been accused by the Federal Trade Commission of misleading customers, according to a new press release from the FTC. The agency alleges the Evolv Express scanners, which are used in about 800 schools in 40 states, aren’t as accurate at detecting weapons as the company claims. And the FTC wants Evolv to stop overstating what its AI can do. “In the proposed FTC settlement order , Evolv would be banned from making unsupported claims about its products’ ability to detect weapons by using artificial intelligence and would also have to give certain K-12 school customers the option to cancel their contracts, which generally lock customers into multi-year deals,” the FTC said in a press release Tuesday. The Evolv weapons detector gained widespread notice in the national press earlier this year when the system was installed in the New York subway system. But even the CEO at the time noted the subway system wasn’t a good use case. The FTC says Evolv has falsely implied that users can avoid having to make the trade-offs necessary for having a highly secure weapon-detection system and a “seamless experience” for people entering a building. At the heart of the problem, setting the scanners to a lower sensitivity level allows too many weapons to get through undetected, and setting it to a higher sensitivity sets off too many false alarms. Evolv says that its system is superior to regular metal detectors because it utilizes AI, but the FTC argues that’s little more than marketing hype. “The FTC has been clear that claims about technology—including artificial intelligence—need to be backed up, and that is especially important when these claims involve the safety of children,” said Samuel Levine, the director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection, according to a press release . “If you make those claims without adequate support, you can expect to hear from the FTC.” The FTC notes in a court filing that in Oct. 2022 a student at a New York school brought a 7-inch knife that passed through an Evolv Express scanner. And other times, Evolv scanners have failed to detect an off-duty cop’s weapon while setting off an alarm for a student’s lunchbox. The school raised the sensitivity levels after the stabbing incident, but that just doubled the false alarm rate to 50%, according to the FTC. It emphasized the need for the public to pay attention to what they eat and to stay safe, especially during the festive period. This was contained in the Christmas and New Year message of the Director General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye to Nigerians. Giving update on the enforcement exercise, the Agency said its men had stormed supermarkets in the big cities across the country such as Lagos, Port Harcourt, Aba, Ibadan, Kaduna, and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, to apprehend manufacturers and merchants of fake drugs and unwholesome foods, while products running into billions of Naira had been confiscated in the last three months of renewed enforcement. She said: “In total, over N120bn worth of seized products were destroyed by the Agency in six months (October-December) in the six geo-political zones and FCT. “The DG however, stated that the Agency would not rest on its oars until the merchants of death are forced out of operation, warning that the Agency would make it hard for them to operate freely and endanger the health of innocent consumers. “The coming year will be tough for the people that prioritize money over the wellbeing of their fellow human beings by compromising quality of medicines and food products in the country.” The DG urged consumers to consistently scrutinize medicines and branded drinks carefully to distinguish genuine products from counterfeits before consumption. “NAFDAC wishes to advise that the members of the public should be vigilant during this yuletide season. We are using this medium to appeal to Nigerians to buy only NAFDAC registered drinks from reputable and licenced retailers, bars and supermarkets. “If the product is being sold well below its normal price, or doesn’t seem to include normal taxes on liquors, then it is probably fake. The first female to hold the position of minister for education, the former Fine Gael TD was a strong advocate for women’s rights. President Michael D Higgins said: “A lifelong committed feminist, Gemma Hussey was a passionate advocate and inspiration for the vitally important increase in the number of women serving in our political system. “As a dedicated and effective government minister, she set a stirring example of the key role which must be held by women in politics. “In introducing aural and oral exams and establishing the National Parents Council as minister for education, she put in place lasting reforms which have benefited all those who have grown up in Ireland in the succeeding decades. “Throughout her career, she remained true to her principles and advocated for social reforms at a time when not all of the causes she supported were popular with all parts of Irish society.” President Higgins said that after her departure from the political front line, Ms Hussey remained an “incisive commentator and an always valuable voice on the political system”. “May I express my deepest sympathies to Gemma’s children Rachel, Ruth and Andrew, and to all her family, friends and former colleagues,” he added.
