Agricultural industries such as meatpacking, dairy farms and poultry and livestock farms also rely heavily on immigrants. “We have five to six employees that do the work that nobody else will do. We wouldn’t survive without them,” said Bruce Lampman, who owns Lampman Dairy Farm, in Bruneau, Idaho. His farm, which has been in the family three decades, has 350 cows producing some 26,000 pounds of milk a day. “My business and every agriculture business in the U.S. will be crippled if they want to get rid of everybody who does the work,” said Lampman, adding that his workers are worried about what’s to come. Farmers also employ foreign nationals who have “temporary protected status” under a 1990 law that allows immigrants to remain if the U.S. has determined their home countries are unsafe because of violence or other reasons. There are people in the U.S. under the program or eligible for it, from countries including El Salvador, Ethiopia, Haiti, Honduras, Lebanon and Ukraine. Many have been here for decades, and Trump has threatened to end the program. Immigration advocates want a pathway for H-2A workers to gain permanent legal status, and agricultural trade organizations are pushing for an expansion of the H-2A program to include year-round operations. The National Milk Producers Federation says it’s too early to say how it would cope with mass deportations under the Trump administration. But the group it “strongly supports efforts to pass agriculture labor reform that provides permanent legal status to current workers and their families and gives dairy farmers access to a workable guestworker program.” Immigrants make up 51% of labor at dairy farms across states, and farms that employ immigrants produce nearly 80% of the nation’s milk supply, according to the organization. “Foreign workers are important to the success of U.S. dairy, and we will work closely with members of Congress and federal officials to show the importance of foreign workers to the dairy industry and farm communities,” Jaime Castaneda, the group’s executive vice president for policy development and strategy, wrote in an email. Adam Croissant, the former vice president of research and development at yogurt company Chobani, which has manufacturing plants in Idaho and New York, said he’s seen a lot of misinformation around immigrants’ workforce contributions. “The dairy industry as a whole understands that without immigrant labor, the dairy industry doesn’t exist. It’s as simple as that,” said Croissant. The US-based company is investing in Melbourne University’s scientists who are working to create a super-species of frogs that can withstand the effects of While most people haven’t heard of the infectious disease, it’s directly caused six extinctions in Australia, more than any other species other than humans. And globally it’s led to the decline of over 500 amphibian species, including 90 extinctions. Leading the response to chytrid is the university’s Dr Andrew Pask, who will be using nanobodies found in camels and lamas to help fight the disease. While this may seem like an odd solution, they’re known to produce antibodies that bind to specific targets, and that’s made them already useful in the fight against cancer and Covid-19. “These nanobodies would prevent the fungus from being able to bind to the skin, enter the skin, and then end that pathogenic cycle that ultimately leads to frog death. And it also blocks the lifecycle of chytrid — because if it can’t infect and then grow in the skin, it can’t release more spores,” he told Yahoo News. “We’re really hoping this could be a nice silver bullet for actually inactivating chytrid fungus and actually give frogs immunity against it.” 🏔️ 🫣 🪲 Pask plans to develop a transgenic frog that can produce the nanobody. Once the solution has been developed, the same nanobody can be introduced into multiple species. Other than being able to resist chytrid, Pask says they'll be "completely normal". "We want them to be in balance with the ecosystem. We don't want to engineer them to be immune to everything, just this current pathogen that is a current threat to species survival," he said. "They've still got to survive the bloody cane toad invasion and all the other things in the environment." As the chytrid front continues to spread through the environment, frogs with edited genes will survive and spread immunity through the population, saving it from extinction. Corroboree frogs number only a few dozen individuals in the wild, so it would be prioritised, and other vulnerable species then be given the treatment. Colossal has announced the first US $1 million ($1.57 million) of its US $3m commitment to fighting chytridiomycosis disease at Pask Lab, which researches evolution, development and reproduction. The team is planning on delivering an effective strategy to combat the disease in just three years' time, with the nanobody being introduced to multiple species. “Time is really of the essence here. We want to get this done as quickly as possible,” Pask said. Colossal’s Chief Science Officer Beth Shapiro told Yahoo News the technology being trialled by the team hasn’t been tried before. “When we think about all the different challenges we have protecting biodiversity, we need to have our minds open to all the potential solutions that are out there. Then Wednesday's targeted fatal shooting of the UnitedHealthcare CEO on a midtown Manhattan sidewalk thrust the executive and his business into the national spotlight. Thompson, who was 50, had worked at the giant UnitedHealth Group Inc for 20 years and run the insurance arm since 2021 after running its Medicare and retirement business. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A federal judge took Diego Pavia 's request for a limited preliminary injunction under advisement at the end of a hearing Wednesday as the Vanderbilt quarterback seeks to play at least another season while his lawsuit against the NCAA plays out in court. U.S. District Judge William L. Campbell asked attorneys how quickly they could be ready for trial. He also asked about the upcoming transfer portal, which opens Monday and closes Dec. 28. Attorney Ryan Downton argued during a 2 1/2-hour hearing that Pavia wants “the narrowest injunction possible” to keep his time in junior college from counting against his NCAA Division I eligibility using older guidelines. Their best hope is for a quick ruling by Monday. “I get the sense from him today that he’s looking at the date the portal closes and trying to give enough time to react before it closes,” Downton said of the judge's timing after the hearing. Campbell peppered attorneys with questions. The judge noted prep schools play against junior colleges, including Pavia's, without starting their NCAA eligibility clock. He also noted junior colleges don't allow redshirt seasons. The judge also said the NCAA has changed its rules over the past 50 years, including allowing freshmen to play and later added the redshirt rule. Campbell sounded surprised when told a player who redshirted this season could play a total of nine games if on the team that wins the College Football Playoff. Pavia filed Nov. 8 in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee in Nashville. His request for a temporary restraining order was denied giving him two more seasons of eligibility allowing a redshirt season “to avoid additional harm.” His lawsuit also asks that Vanderbilt, or any other college, not be punished for complying with orders from the court. Pavia filed a declaration Monday that he is applying to the masters' program for legal studies at Vanderbilt starting in January if he is granted the preliminary injunction. Attorneys Tamarra Matthews Johnson and Max Warren argued for the NCAA that Pavia had done exactly what the organization wants athletes to do earning a bachelor's degree at New Mexico State before being a graduate transfer to Vanderbilt earlier this year. They also argued Pavia easily can seek another degree without playing football. Warren disputed the idea of irreparable damages noting Pavia can receive economic damages at trial without an injunction. Warren also questioned the lawsuit's timing with Pavia quoted that this was his last year of college football. “His best opportunity to earn a living is playing college football ...,” Downton said in court. “This is his chance.” Pavia did not get an offer from a Football Bowl Subdivision school coming out of Volcano Vista High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He went to New Mexico Military Institute in 2020 and led the junior college to the 2021 national championship. He went to New Mexico State in 2022 and won 10 games in 2023. The Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year then followed his head coach, Jerry Kill, and offensive coordinator Tim Beck to Vanderbilt this offseason. Matthews Johnson argued that Vanderbilt simply will find another quarterback. Vanderbilt hasn't had many quarterbacks like Pavia who had a handful of his teammates sitting behind him in court. Pavia is a big reason why Vanderbilt is 6-6 and bowl eligible for the first time since 2018. He led the Commodores to their best start in decades, ranked twice in the AP Top 25 and posted their biggest win ever beating then-No. 1 Alabama. That snapped a 60-game winless skid over over AP top-5 teams. Wednesday’s hearing coincided with the early signing period . Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea supported his quarterback’s initial filing and has talked of how much he has meant to the Commodores.
