Jimmy Carter: Many evolutions for a centenarian ‘citizen of the world’Hundreds of properties have been affected in Rhondda Cynon Taf once again due to flooding as Storm Bert ravaged south Wales and major incident was declared for county. Between 200 to 300 properties, both residential and commercial, were affected and heartbreaking images saw residents bail out water with bins and businesses desperately try and save their livelihoods. Over in Pontypridd's Mill Street Enrico Orsi, who owns Zucco Cafe in Pontypridd , said it was "like a scene from Titanic' as he desperately tried to save his cafe from flooding. Back in 2020 the street was also hard hit by Storm Dennis which saw businesses across the town ravaged by flood water. Enrico says it was only because he got to his cafe so early that there was no damage but other businesses on the street have been affected. He said: "I opened about 7.30am, bit of a treacherous drive in... the outside looked fine, it was raining a lot but there wasn't any surface water or puddles, everything was draining fine... my first customer arrived at about 7.45am, he opened the door and said 'have you seen this, outside?' and I could see the drains were shooting up like fountains at which point then I started to panic... my business was flashing before my eyes. If water gets into a food and drink business like my own, that is just game over until the new year." Enrico was able to get flood barriers in place in his cafe, however in his panic put them in the wrong way meaning water could still get in. He said: "It was like a scene from the Titanic with getting buckets of water and getting it out." The business was helped by the local community and its regular customers who came down to help. This included a builder who sourced Enrico sandbags and they were able to make the cafe watertight. For the latest Pontypridd news, sign up to our newsletter here . Other businesses on the street, who weren't open as early as Enrico to notice the flooding and didn't have flood barriers, began to flood. Enrico, who was documenting the flooding on social media to appeal for help, said: "By that point, there was just a huge influx of people from the entire community... there were lots of people down there, lots of familiar faces, some people I had never seen before but everyone just got their hands dirty, quite literally, and just helped in any way they could which was a real positive today in and amongst a really tragic scene. "That community spirit really kept the energy levels up throughout the whole day. We were there from 7am to 5pm, it was a really long day." Talking about the community spirit Enrico said the feeling was "palpable in the town and especially on the street of Mill Street, you can really feel that community spirit. Today, as tragic as it is, it is going to make it, as a community, a lot stronger. It was quite an emotional thing to be a part of at times, everybody being there for each other, it was really nice." Elsewhere in Pontypridd homes on Sion St, right on the banks of the Taff, were badly flooded, with the community coming together to help there too. Rania Koutsikou, 32, a part-time lecturer and PhD student at the University of South Wales, said: "People are very keen to help, as you can see, everyone is around, offering coffee, offering cookies, fire service are here now." Paula Williams, who also lives on Sion Street, added: "The river levels were going down last night when we went to bed. We only knew something was happening because we had a neighbour knocking us. She was shouting 'get the cars moved'. "We managed to get the dog out down my parents so we didn't have to worry about her and then it was all hands to the pump." She said it was the work of them and neighbours fighting to protect the homes that stopped the flooding being as bad as in 2020. Adding her neighbours bought pumps from Screwfix to hold back the water but it was lucky the water had come in during the morning when people were awake. Other businesses affected on Mill Street include Storyville Books, which Enrico says has been "really badly hit... which is just gutting for them." Although normally closed on Mondays Enrico will be opening Zuccos Cafe on Monday, November 25 to "be there for the people who are going to be needing help tomorrow. To show people that we are open for business and that we don't want this to deter people from coming down, we want to let people know that Mill Street is still open for business."The Growing Medium Market Size Is Expected To Grow To $4.84 Billion In 2028 At A CAGR Of 3.1%
Israel strikes Houthi rebels in Yemen's capital while WHO chief says he was meters awayThe Buffalo Bills are back from their bye week and gearing up for a six-week sprint to the end of the regular season. At 9-2, the team has surpassed any reasonable expectations set for it coming into the season. A fifth straight AFC East title is all but guaranteed, and could be wrapped up as soon as Sunday if things go right. The No. 1 seed in the conference playoffs is still in play. As the team prepares to welcome the San Francisco 49ers to Highmark Stadium on Sunday night in a nationally televised game, here is a look at three things that have gone right and three that have gone at least partially wrong thus far: Let’s start with the good: Bills quarterback Josh Allen, left, celebrates after running for the game-winning touchdown against the Chiefs at Highmark Stadium on Nov. 17. The Bills’ star quarterback has elevated his game to another level this season, even if he’s not statistically on pace to have his best season. Allen is projected to throw for 3,930 yards and 28 touchdowns, while completing 64.0% of his passes this year. His best season came in 2020, when he threw for 4,544 yards and 37 touchdowns while completing 69.2% of his passes. Still, Allen’s generally considered to be having his best NFL season to date. He’s on pace to throw a career-low eight interceptions (he threw 10 in 2020), but his MVP case goes beyond just that. Right or wrong, the MVP discussion will inevitably look at a team’s record, and the Bills are 9-2 in a year many had them pegged as a 10- or 11-win team at max. Allen’s leadership and command of the offense have never been greater, thus strengthening his MVP case. Buffalo Bills roundtable: How far can they go? Our writers weigh in as this magical season resumes The Bills’ defense always stresses the importance of taking the football away, and few teams in the league have been better at it thus far. Buffalo’s 21 takeaways currently ranks fifth, just two behind league-leading Houston with 23 and one behind a three-way tie for second with 22 between Green Bay, Pittsburgh and Minnesota. Buffalo’s 13 interceptions rank fourth in the league, and its eight recovered fumbles is tied for fifth. Conversely, the Bills’ offense is taking good care of the football, with just seven giveaways. Buffalo’s five interceptions is tied for sixth fewest in the league and its two lost fumbles is second to only Detroit (one lost). That’s led to a plus-14 turnover differential that is tops in the NFL. The Bills are allowing sacks on just 3.7% of their pass plays – the best number in the NFL. That’s not totally an offensive line stat, as Allen’s elusiveness plays into it, but it definitely says a lot about how the group up front is performing. The Bills have started the same five – left tackle Dion Dawkins, left guard David Edwards, center Connor McGovern, right guard O’Cyrus Torrence and right tackle Spencer Brown – in every game, save the Week 11 win over the Chiefs, which Brown missed with a sprained ankle. On the ground, the Bills are third in expected points added per rush, according to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats. That number quantifies the net value a ball carrier adds on run plays by translating yards gained into points scored. Again, that’s not totally an offensive line stat, but as Bills head coach Sean McDermott points out after every game, success most frequently starts up front at the line of scrimmages. Here are three things that haven’t always been great: Want a chance at a new stadium seat? Get in line. Buffalo Bills still adding to waitlist While the Bills are in the middle of the pack in terms of yards allowed per game, ranking 14th at 119.1, they are 30th in terms of yards allowed per carry, at 4.85. Take a look at the upcoming schedule of running backs the team faces: Christian McCaffrey (49ers), Kyren Williams (Rams) and David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs (Lions). This concern goes beyond just the short term, though. The Week 4 loss to Derrick Henry, Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens is tough to forget. It feels like any path to the Super Bowl is going to have to go through Baltimore and/or Kansas City, and the Chiefs should get Isiah Pacheco back soon. The Bills are going to have to get tougher against the run, or else teams will be able to control the clock, and thus the pace of the game. Buffalo is allowing 1.79 yards per carry before contact, which is eighth most in the NFL, according to the league’s Next Gen Stats. That speaks to the defensive line’s inability at times to get to the opposing running back. It’s not been all bad for the run defense, as the team has stuffed opposing rushing attempts, meaning holding them to no gain or for a loss of yardage, on 23.3% of carries, which is the second-best rate in the league. The consistency, however, has lacked, and that’s a potential problem moving forward. The 61-yard field goal that won the game against Miami was one of the best kicks in team history. Bass followed that up with another good showing against Indianapolis in Week 10, but a missed extra point against Kansas City once again led to some doubt creeping in. It felt for most of that game against the Chiefs like the missed extra point was going to loom large, but the rest of the team eventually made sure that didn’t happen. Nevertheless, it feels certain that there is going to come a time that the Bills need to rely on Bass down the stretch, and their confidence in doing so might have understandably been shaken by his miss against the Chiefs. Bass has made 86.4% of his field goals this season (19 of 22), which ranks 15th among qualified kickers (those with at least 16 attempts). Of the 40 kickers in the league who have an attempted an extra point, however, Bass ranks 36th, with a conversion rate of 89.2%. The Bills don’t currently have a kicker on their practice squad, so they’re all in on Bass coming through. He needs to reward them for their confidence. Bills linebacker Terrel Bernard, middle, celebrates his interception against the Chiefs in Week 11. The Bills have 13 interceptions this season, which is fourth most in the NFL. The Bills’ weekly injury report has needed subtitles at times this season because it’s been so long. By unofficial count, the Bills have had 15 players classified as starters or key contributors who have missed at least one game because of injury. That’s a lot of bumps and bruises. The good news, however, is that the bye week came at the right time. The team opened linebacker Matt Milano’s practice window before the bye, meaning his return should come soon. If he can get back up to speed before the playoffs, he gives the team a great 1-2 punch at linebacker with Terrel Bernard (and if not, Dorian Williams has looked just fine in Milano’s place). Ideally, the team’s run of wrist injuries is behind it. Amari Cooper and rookie Keon Coleman should be closer to 100% coming out of the bye. Rookie defensive tackle DeWayne Carter, who had put together a few nice performances before suffering a wrist injury, is eligible to return from injured reserve starting this week. Veteran defensive end Dawuane Smoot has to miss at least two more games while on injured reserve with a wrist injury of his own, while linebacker Baylon Spector is out for at least two more games because of a calf injury. All of them should be able to return in time for the playoffs, giving the Bills the chance to be as healthy as they’ve been all season at exactly the right time. Sent weekly directly to your inbox!
Nigel Farage has said he is willing to help incoming US ambassador Lord Mandelson negotiate with Donald Trump's administration. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer appointed the former New Labour minister earlier this month. He is due to take up his new role in Washington early next year. In the days after his appointment, one of the managers of Mr Trump's presidential election campaign, Chris LaCivita, described him as an "absolute moron". In 2019, Lord Mandelson told an Italian newspaper Mr Trump is "little short of a white nationalist and racist". But Mr Farage says he is willing to use his connections with Team Trump in the national interest to help foster good US-UK relations - despite his political differences...Organizers say two sailors have died in Sydney to Hobart yacht race amid wild weather conditions SYDNEY (AP) — Organizers said that two Sydney to Hobart sailors have died at sea amid wild weather conditions that forced line honors favorite Master Lock Comanche to withdraw among mass retirements. He was “being treated for age-related medical conditions,” the statement added. Its creator, writer and director, Hwang Dong-hyuk says whittling down the cast made him happy because less people were easier to manage on set. Hwang told the Associated Press in a Q&A that a third and final season has already filmed and it's better than season two. He also says his next project will be even darker in tone than “Squid Game.” Powerful thunderstorms rumble across Texas, delaying holiday travel DALLAS (AP) — Severe thunderstorms are firing up in parts of Texas and could trigger high winds, hail and potential tornadoes. WASHINGTON (AP) — Special counsel Jack Smith asked a federal judge on Monday to dismiss the case accusing President-elect Donald Trump of plotting to overturn the 2020 election , citing longstanding Justice Department policy shielding presidents from prosecution while in office. The move announced in court papers marks the end of the Justice Department's landmark effort to hold Trump accountable for what prosecutors called a criminal conspiracy to cling to power in the run-up to his supporters' attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Justice Department prosecutors, citing longstanding department guidance that a sitting president cannot be prosecuted, said the department’s position is that “the Constitution requires that this case be dismissed before the defendant is inaugurated.” “That prohibition is categorical and does not turn on the gravity of the crimes charged, the strength of the Government’s proof, or the merits of the prosecution, which the Government stands fully behind,” the prosecutors wrote in Monday’s court filing. The decision was expected after Smith's team began assessing how to wind down both the 2020 election interference case and the separate classified documents case in the wake of Trump's victory over Vice President Kamala Harris. The Justice Department believes Trump can no longer be tried in accordance with longstanding policy that says sitting presidents cannot be prosecuted. Trump has cast both cases as politically motivated, and had vowed to fire Smith as soon as he takes office in January. The 2020 election case brought last year was once seen as one of the most serious legal threats facing the Republican as he vied to reclaim the White House. But it quickly stalled amid legal fighting over Trump’s sweeping claims of immunity from prosecution for acts he took while in the White House. The U.S. Supreme Court in July ruled for the first time that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution, and sent the case back to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan to determine which allegations in the indictment, if any, could proceed to trial. The case was just beginning to pick up steam again in the trial court in the weeks leading up to this year’s election. Smith’s team in October filed a lengthy brief laying out new evidence they planned to use against him at trial, accusing him of using “resorting to crimes” in an increasingly desperate effort to overturn the will of voters after he lost to President Joe Biden.
Officers investigating Louise Haigh's "stolen" phone believed a photo she submitted of the handset had been taken after the alleged theft, Sky News has been told. Two sources said after looking at metadata attached to the photo - information that often details when photos were captured - officers believed it had been taken after the date at which Ms Haigh alleged the phone had been stolen. Sources close to Ms Haigh did not respond when approached about the allegation. The Sheffield MP on Friday after Sky News revealed she and was convicted in 2014 in relation to an allegedly stolen phone. The conviction is believed to relate to fraud. The now former transport secretary claims the incident was a "genuine mistake" from which she did not benefit. However, Sky News has spoken to three sources who say the stolen phone report was pursued by Ms Haigh for her own personal gain. Sky News had also spoken to one source who alleged that the handset was used to call Ms Haigh's mother soon after the reported theft, but had been unable to verify the allegation. On Thursday night, Ms Haigh said the incident arose after she was "mugged while on a night out" in 2013. She said she reported the incident to the police and gave officers a list of items she believed had been taken - including a work mobile phone. However, in her statement to Sky News, she said she discovered "some time later" that "the mobile in question had not been taken". In the interim she was issued with another work phone. When she turned on the original work device, it "triggered police attention and I was asked to come in for questioning", she said. "My solicitor advised me not to comment during that interview and I regret following that advice," she added. "Under the advice of my solicitor I pleaded guilty - despite the fact this was a genuine mistake from which I did not make any gain. "The magistrates accepted all of these arguments and gave me the lowest possible outcome (a discharge) available." It is understood Ms Haigh believes she disclosed the incident in full when she was appointed to the shadow cabinet in 2020. However, Downing Street said on Friday that Ms Haigh resigned after "new information" emerged, but declined to say officially if the prime minister knew about the conviction when he appointed his cabinet in July. On Friday, a source told Sky News' political editor Beth Rigby that the story that emerged on Thursday was "inconsistent" with what Sir Keir had been told when Ms Haigh was appointed to his shadow cabinet. It is understood the prime minister was "not able to square the circle" and as a result the cabinet minister was advised to resign. Friends of Ms Haigh insist she shared the "full facts" of the conviction and that Sir Keir "had expressed sympathy that police had taken the decision to prosecute her".No. 23 Alabama women beat Alabama State 83-33 at Emerald Coast Classic
Mumbai, the country’s biggest and most expensive property market, has set a new benchmark by recording the best-ever November performance in terms of registration of real estate deals and revenue collection through stamp duty charges. The country’s commercial capital has registered 10,200 property transactions during the month, up 5% from a year ago, while the exchequer has fetched 30% higher revenue worth Rs 924 crore through stamp duty collections, showed data from inspector general of registration, Maharashtra. “Mumbai’s property market continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience and adaptability to evolving buyer preferences. The increasing demand for premium properties and larger living spaces underscores a decisive shift towards quality, value, and long-term investment in the city’s ever-dynamic real estate landscape,” said Shishir Baijal, CMD, Knight Frank India. The sustained uptrend in the housing property market has pushed the cumulative registration numbers in the eleven months of 2024 to over 128,774 deals, marking a 12% year-on-year increase. Cumulative stamp duty collections too exceeded the Rs 11,000 crore milestone in November, marking the fastest growth in revenue from this segment for the state government. This consistent performance underscores Mumbai Metropolitan Region's position as a critical driver of India's real estate and economic landscape, in addition to driving the state’s revenues and economic stability,” said Boman Irani, president, CREDAI National. During the month, demand for higher-valued properties saw a significant increase, with properties priced at Rs 2 crore and above making up 23% of registrations, up from 17% the previous year. Transactions in this segment totalled to 2,328 properties. Meanwhile, the share of properties valued at less than Rs 50 lakhs dropped sharply, falling to 20% from 28% in November 2023. On a sequential basis, property registrations saw a decline of 21%, with revenue collections decreasing by 23%. This was attributed primarily to the seasonal surge observed in October, fuelled by the festive activities of Diwali and Navratri. The modest activity in November may also reflect a market pause following October’s robust performance. Residential properties accounted for 80% of total registrations in November. Apartments sized between 500 and 1,000 sq ft remained the most preferred, representing 48% of all registrations during the month. The share of larger apartments measuring 1,000 to 2,000 sq ft also rose from 8% to 14%, and those over 2,000 sq ft grew from 2% to 5%, reflecting a steady shift in buyer preference towards more spacious living spaces. Smaller units up to 500 sq ft saw a sharp decrease, from 47% to 33%. Nominations for ET MSME Awards are now open. The last day to apply is November 30, 2024.
