Bank of Montreal stock rises Monday, outperforms market

NEW YORK — “Barbenheimer” was a phenomenon impossible to manufacture. But, more than a year later, that hasn’t stopped people from trying to make “Glicked” — or even “Babyratu” — happen. The counterprogramming of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” in July 2023 hit a nerve culturally and had the receipts to back it up. Unlike so many things that begin as memes, it transcended its online beginnings. Instead of an either-or, the two movies ultimately complemented and boosted one another at the box office. And ever since, moviegoers, marketers and meme makers have been trying to recreate that moment, searching the movie release schedule for odd mashups and sending candidates off into the social media void. Most attempts have fizzled (sorry, “Saw Patrol” ). This weekend is perhaps the closest approximation yet as the Broadway musical adaptation “Wicked” opens Friday against the chest-thumping sword-and-sandals epic “Gladiator II.” Two big studio releases (Universal and Paramount), with one-name titles, opposite tones and aesthetics and big blockbuster energy — it was already halfway there before the name game began: “Wickiator,” “Wadiator,” “Gladwick” and even the eyebrow raising “Gladicked” have all been suggested. “'Glicked' rolls off the tongue a little bit more,” actor Fred Hechinger said at the New York screening of “Gladiator II” this week. “I think we should all band around ‘Glicked.’ It gets too confusing if you have four or five different names for it.” As with “Barbenheimer," as reductive as it might seem, “Glicked” also has the male/female divide that make the fan art extra silly. One is pink and bright and awash in sparkles, tulle, Broadway bangers and brand tie-ins; The other is all sweat and sand, blood and bulging muscles. Both films topped Fandango’s most anticipated holiday movie survey, where 65% of respondents said that they were interested in the “Glicked” double feature. Theaters big and small are also pulling out the stops with movie-themed tie-ins. B&B Theaters will have Roman guards tearing tickets at some locations and Maximus popcorn tubs. Marcus Theaters is doing Oz photo ops and friendship bracelet-making. Alamo Drafthouse is leaning into the singalong aspect (beware, though, not all theaters are embracing this) and the punny drinks like “Defying Gravi-Tea.” “Rather than it being in competition, I think they’re in conversation,” “Gladiator II” star Paul Mescal said. “This industry needs a shot in the arm. Those films gave it last year. We hope to do it this year.” And the hope is that audiences will flock to theaters to be part of this moment as well. It's a sorely needed influx of could-be blockbusters into a marketplace that's still at an 11% deficit from last year and down 27.2% from 2019, according to data from Comscore. “Competition is good for the marketplace. It’s good for consumers,” said Michael O'Leary, the president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners. “Having two great movies coming out at the same time is simply a multiplier effect.” “Glicked” is currently tracking for a combined North American debut in the $165 million range, with “Wicked” forecast to earn around $100 million (up from the $80 million estimates a few weeks ago) and “Gladiator II” pegged for the $65 million range. “Barbenheimer” shattered its projections last July. Going into that weekend, “Barbie” had been pegged for $90 million and “Oppenheimer” around $40 million. Ultimately, they brought in a combined $244 million in that first outing, and nearly $2.4 billion by the end of their runs. It’s possible “Glicked” will exceed expectations, too. And it has the advantage of another behemoth coming close behind: “Moana 2,” which opens just five days later on the Wednesday before the Thanksgiving holiday. “Glickedana” triple feature anyone? “These are 10 important days,” O'Leary said. “It’s going to show the moviegoing audience that there’s a lot of compelling stuff out there for them to see.” There are infinite caveats to the imperfect comparison to “Barbenheimer,” as well. “Wicked” is a “Part One.” Musicals carry their own baggage with moviegoers, even those based on wildly successful productions (ahem, “Cats”). “Gladiator II” got a head start and opened internationally last weekend. In fact, in the U.K. it played alongside “Paddington in Peru,” where that double was pegged “Gladdington.” “Gladiator” reviews, while positive, are a little more divided than the others. And neither directors Ridley Scott nor Jon M. Chu has the built-in box office cache that Christopher Nolan’s name alone carries at the moment. The new films also cost more than “Barbie” ($145 million) and “Oppenheimer” ($100 million). According to reports, “Gladiator II” had a $250 million price tag; “Wicked” reportedly cost $150 million to produce (and that does not include the cost of the second film, due next year). The narrative, though, has shifted away from “who will win the weekend.” Earlier this year, Chu told The Associated Press that he loves that this is a moment where “we can root for all movies all the time.” Close behind are a bevy of Christmas releases with double feature potential, but those feel a little more niche. There’s the remake of “Nosferatu,” the Nicole Kidman kink pic “Babygirl” and the Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown.” The internet can’t even seem to decide on its angle for that batch of contenders, and none exactly screams blockbuster. Sometimes the joy is just in the game, however. Some are sticking with the one-name mashup (“Babyratu”); others are suggesting that the fact that two of the movies feature real-life exes (Timothée Chalamet and Lily-Rose Depp) is enough reason for a double feature. And getting people talking is half the battle. When in doubt, or lacking a catchy name, there’s always the default: “This is my Barbenheimer.” ___ Associated Press journalist John Carucci and Film Writer Jake Coyle contributed reporting.

A tent encampment at Moss Park in Toronto on Sept. 14. Doug Ives/The Canadian Press Lisa Gonsalves is board chair of United Way Greater Toronto. Victor Dodig is president and chief executive of CIBC and United Way Greater Toronto 2024’s community campaign chair. Our parents were attracted to the promise of this country more than half a century ago. Many others have since immigrated here, with Canada’s population growing steadily in recent years. This is especially true in the Greater Toronto Area, Canada’s biggest metropolitan region. With cranes dotting the skyline and construction projects everywhere you look, the GTA is projected to reach close to nine million residents over the next decade. Growth creates jobs and can further community prosperity. But as the GTA expands, we also see a sharp increase in those who are struggling. While the problem is not unique to this region, nowhere else in Canada is it as big. More than 1.4 million people in the GTA live in poverty. More than one in 10 Torontonians are relying on food banks. Meanwhile, 51 per cent of new food bank clients have someone in their household who is employed, highlighting that it takes more than ever before for families to find financial stability. Wait times for subsidized housing across the GTA can be anywhere from seven to 17 years . These numbers reveal a critical issue: while growth brings opportunity, it also exposes deep gaps in our social infrastructure. If we are to sustain and share the benefits of growth, we need to invest in housing, health care and social services that support our communities. And with these investments, not only can growth be more even and sustainable, there can be more of it. Investing in social infrastructure – through corporate social responsibility, philanthropy and volunteerism – yields economic returns far beyond just social benefits. For example, analysis produced by Deloitte for the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association found that increasing community housing stock could boost economic productivity by 5.7 per cent to 9.3 per cent, leading to a potential GDP increase of $67-billion to $136-billion by 2030. United Way research has found that equitable access to housing, employment, food and social services not only prevents displacement but strengthens local economies. For example, affordable housing preservation programs such as community land trusts can significantly reduce displacement, while promoting housing stability in changing neighbourhoods. And this has a greater economic impact. For instance, the Parkdale Neighbourhood Land Trust , which bought its first 15-unit rooming house in the Toronto neighbourhood in 2019, is now the steward of 84 properties offering 205 rental units across the city’s west end. Such interventions, when paired with work force development programs, lead to better economic outcomes by ensuring local residents can maintain jobs and contribute to the economy. In Regent Park, a Community Benefits Agreement has resulted in about 1,600 jobs for local residents since 2006. For regions such as the GTA, where rapid population growth and a large newcomer work force are reshaping the economic landscape, investment in equitable housing, health care and social services is not just important – it is essential. As the population expands, the need for robust social infrastructure becomes even more pressing. When we invest in these services, we ensure that all residents, particularly newcomers and marginalized groups, can fully participate in and contribute to the local economy. Philanthropy and government investment, when applied strategically, can drive significant economic impact – but it requires collective action. No single effort can address the complex challenges of poverty, mental health, housing and employment. We must bring together corporations, governments and community organizations to tackle these interconnected issues at scale. A strong economy starts with strong communities. To create a thriving region where everyone can prosper, we must champion community-driven initiatives that bolster the economy, shaping a future where growth benefits everyone.Understanding Telescope Mounts: Alt-Azimuth vs. Equatorial

China's reported decision to build Three Gorges like mega hydel project on the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra in India) is not just a strong reminder on the piling security costs attached to the delay in commencing work on the Upper Siang Hydroelectric Project in Arunachal Pradesh, but also a wake-up call on the need to treat water infrastructure building along the Himalayan rivers as a strategic imperative. ET Year-end Special Reads Corporate Kalesh: Top family disputes of India Inc in 2024 The world of business lost these eminent people in 2024 Fast, faster, fastest: How 2024 put more speed into your shopping Hydel projects are just as important as border roads. It took India decades to realise that its policy of not building roads along the China border was counterproductive. By the time New Delhi got a grip of reality, Beijing had built all weather blacktop roads on the other side of the Line of Actual Control. As India countered, standoffs and skirmishes increased. Now, when India and China have just completed a troop disengagement process after a four-year close-contact forward deployment, Beijing's move on Yarlung Tsangpo only raises more doubts on its overall political intent. Not to forget, resuming river water conversation is one of the items on the agenda of normalisation of relations. But clearly, China appears to be drawing its line on the Brahmaputra river even as it talks de-escalation on LAC. The over 10,000 MW Upper Siang project provides an answer, but in this case India is up against domestic political compulsions. The status of the project is that the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation needs to do some drilling work to carry out geological studies, important to the process of finalising the site. However, this has not happened because of local protests. Any divergence of water will adversely impact the flow of Brahmaputra during the non-monsoon months. This could stretch to four-to-five months a year. Thereafter, the river benefits and enlarges from the Indian monsoon rain. A large storage, as envisaged in the Upper Siang project, will cover for these months and help the local population against the possibility of China weaponising the Yarlung Tsangpo before it enters India. This political communication has, thus far, not succeeded locally, also complicated by the fact that one of the towns likely to be submerged is Yingkiong, which is the constituency of former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Gegong Apang. Similar delays on the 850 MW Ratle project on River Chenab allowed Pakistan the space to lobby with the US as well as the World Bank and drag India to a bizarre arbitration, where two parallel processes are going on simultaneously. India now wants a complete relook at the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty and has sent four notices to Pakistan. India is an upper riparian country with Pakistan and a lower riparian with China. So, the situation is not fully comparable. But the solution to problems on both fronts is similar: Build efficiently, build fast. The reason is that trust stands eroded with both countries. The last agreement India had with China on sharing of hydrological data for Brahmaputra and Sutlej has expired. The Indus Waters Treaty was a more robust affair, which allowed Pakistan legal options to hold up even run-of-the-river projects on the tributaries of Indus in India. In other words, India seems to have had a rough deal with legal instruments with both countries. While it has none to tie down China as a lower riparian country, it has to contend with a strong treaty with Pakistan as an upper riparian. The way through this conundrum is just like with border roads, India has no option but to build hydel projects with strategic urgency, keeping in mind that it's on the receiving end of what China is doing - be it environmental like glacial lake outburst flood (Glof) or water security like the Yarlung Tsangpo plans. However, it might finally be wrapped by Nov 27. Pushpa 2 Release Delay: Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna starrer is one of the most awaited movies of the year. A sequel to the 2021 actioner, the drama is scheduled to hit the big screens on December 5 after several changes made to the release date. However, the release is shadowed with uncertainty as it is being reported that several parts of the film are yet to be shot. However, new reports suggest that the film will finally be wrapped up in a few days. Pushpa 2 post-production is working on a clock Pushpa 2 makers have already commenced the promotions and pre-release events of the Allu Arjun starrer. A few days of release remain, a report by 123 Telegu suggests that the shoot will only be wrapped up just 7 days before the release. This leaves the team with just a week to complete the remaining post-production work by November 27. Although there is no official confirmation is out yet. Sukumar, known for his detailed and slow-paced filmmaking, faced delays partly due to Fahadh Faasil’s scheduling conflicts. Additional challenges further extended the shoot over several months. These delays have sparked speculation among social media users and industry insiders about the possibility of another postponement. In the meantime, Allu Arjun is actively participating in promotional planning, with a grand event planned in Hyderabad during the first week of December 2024. Fans making theories amid Pushpa 2 release After the release, Some fan theories have suggested that Pushpa will die at the hands of his rivals early on in the movie and his look-alike son will come back to avenge his death. Another speculation is that a pregnant Srivalli (Rashmika Mandanna) will escape to Japan with the help of Pushpa's associates after her husband is killed by the mafia. Japan is where Pushpa Raj's son will grow up away from harm, and return to avenge his father's murder. Another theory claims that Srivalli will die in the movie as Pushpa is out of the country. When he learns of her death, devastated, he seeks revenge on her murderers. NoneIt's no secret that Akbar V's love for Nicki Minaj goes way back . For this reason, it doesn't come as a major surprise that the femcee took to social media today to wish the "FTCU" rapper a happy birthday. She turns 42 today, and in honor of the occasion, Akbar wrote her a heartfelt message on X. In it, she refers to Nicki as her big sister, and thanks her for all she's done. "Happy birthday to my big sister @NICKIMINAJ i love you thank you for all you do for female rap thank you for the tips behind the scenes you have given me thank you for not being who they try to [portray] you to be," she wrote. Last summer, she even dropped a song seemingly dedicated to her, which sparked some controversy among fans. While some thought it was a nice gesture, others thought she took things too far. Regardless, she stood by the track and came to her own defense on X. “The fact that folks think she gotta like my post or comment is cr*zy. I’m a fan of hers. (AP) — At least 6,000 inmates escaped from a high-security prison in Mozambique’s capital on Christmas Day after a rebellion, the country's police chief said, as widespread post-election riots and violence are roiling the country. Police chief Bernardino Rafael said 33 prisoners died and 15 others were injured during a confrontation with the security forces. The prisoners fled during violent protests that have seen police cars, stations and infrastructure destroyed after the country’s Constitutional Council confirmed the ruling Frelimo party as the winner of the Oct. 9 elections. The escape from the Maputo Central Prison, located 14 kilometers (9 miles) southwest of the capital, started around midday on Wednesday after “agitation” by a “group of subversive protesters” nearby, Rafael said. Some of the prisoners at the facility snatched weapons from the guards and started freeing other detainees. “A curious fact is that in that prison we had 29 convicted terrorists, who they released. We are worried, as a country, as Mozambicans, as members of the defense and security forces,” said Rafael. “They (protesters) were making noise, demanding that they be able to remove the prisoners who are there serving their sentences”, said Rafael, adding that the protests led to the collapse of a wall, allowing the prisoners to flee. He called on the escaped prisoners to surrender to authorities and for the population to be informed about the fugitives. Videos circulating on social media show the moment inmates left the prison, while other recordings reveal captures made by military personnel and prison guards. Many prisoners tried to hide in homes, but some were unsuccessful and ended up being detained again. In one video, a prisoner still with handcuffs on his right wrist says he was held n the disciplinary section of the prison and was released by other inmates.

The Internet Is Holding Space for This ‘Defying Gravity’ ‘Wicked’ MemeIowa followed its lowest-scoring game of the season with a 110-point eruption the next time out. The Hawkeyes will be one week removed from that scorching effort when they host Northwestern in Tuesday's Big Ten opener in Iowa City, but rust won't be the only roadblock for a potential repeat showing. Iowa (6-1) also is bracing for stiffer competition in conference play while navigating an injury to Seydou Traore. The reserve forward suffered a sprained ankle midway through the first half of a 110-77 home rout of South Carolina Upstate on Nov. 26. Also missing frontcourt contributors Even Brauns and Cooper Koch, the Hawkeyes still flexed their resilience and depth. Brock Harding notched a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds and Owen Freeman netted 17 points as five Iowa players scored in double figures. "Coming off a loss, going into Thanksgiving break here, we've got a couple days off coming, it'd be easy to kinda (think), ‘All right, let's relax for this one, guys sit out,'" Harding said. "But I think we really locked in." Northwestern (6-2) overcame 40.8 percent shooting to defeat UNLV 66-61 in the third-place game of the Arizona Tip-Off on Friday in Tempe, Ariz. Brooks Barnhizer, a preseason All-Big Ten pick who was sidelined by a foot injury during the Wildcats' first four games, had team highs of 23 points, nine rebounds and six assists. He has scored at least 20 points in three of four games. Northwestern limited UNLV to a 42.1 percent effort from the floor. Matthew Nicholson propelled the defense with two of the Wildcats' seven steals to go with two blocks. "We're a defensive-minded team and, you know, our identity is just getting stops," Barnhizer said. "Everything else will take care of itself. So, the older guys were trying to come out here and do that tonight and I think we did a pretty good job of it." Strong ‘D' helped Northwestern's ball movement, too, as the Wildcats assisted on 15 of 20 made field goals. Northwestern went 8-for-18 (44.4 percent) from long range to improve to 3-0 this season when connecting on 40 percent of its 3-point shots or better. --Field Level Media
