Victoria Police are investigating an incident in the downtown core on Christmas Eve, involving a stolen vehicle that evaded officers before being recovered. Around 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 24, officers received a call from the owners of a stolen vehicle that it had been spotted being driven downtown, Vic PD confirmed in an email to Victoria News. Officers located the vehicle and moved into position behind it. However, the driver ran a red light, which caused officers to end their pursuit for public safety reasons. Police located the stolen vehicle again, a few moments later, immobile. In an attempt to prevent the individual from fleeing further, officers executed a manoeuvre which resulted in the stolen vehicle losing one of its tires. Despite the damage, the vehicle managed to flee the scene on three wheels. The pursuit resumed as the stolen vehicle sped down some of Victoria's busiest arteries. Many social media users commented on the event and posted videos of the sighting. “Holy there is a guy driving a three-wheeled 4x4 down Douglas sparks flying with two dozen cops chasing them they almost hit us,” said Facebook user Takuma Valcourt. A Richmond resident shares her "full-circle" moment after receiving help from the Richmond Christmas Fund this year. Jane Malificiar is one of many people helped by the annual Christmas program run by Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG). The program helps local residents facing financial hardship by providing them with grocery vouchers, toys and gift cards so they can enjoy a holiday celebration every year. Before the pandemic, Malificiar was a settlement worker helping newcomers, immigrants and refugees settle in Canada. Part of her job included introducing clients to the Richmond Christmas Fund. However, after the COVID-19 pandemic, she couldn't find work. Malificiar went back to school and obtained a certificate as a social worker, but had difficulty finding jobs due to a medical condition that prevented her from getting a driver's licence, which is required for many social worker jobs. "When I tried to go back to work, there was a lot of competition," she said, adding she has been constantly applying for jobs. "I've gotten so close, but it's often always the driver's licence requirement that is a barrier, which I can't help." Despite having referred many clients pre-pandemic to the Christmas Fund, Malificiar never thought about applying for it herself. "It wasn't until I noticed the long lineup at Lansdowne Centre for the Christmas Fund that I finally remembered about it," she said. "I had the luxury of time on my hands since I was still applying for jobs and decided to line up after making sure I met all the requirements." Malificiar was able to receive a $45 voucher from the Richmond Christmas Fund this year, something she said would help with groceries during the holidays. "It's such a full-circle moment for me, from helping others get acquainted with the Richmond Christmas Fund and now getting help back from the same program," she said. "And because I was able to receive the voucher, I decided to take myself off the Richmond Food Bank list for the holidays to make sure other families can also have food for the holidays." When asked why she decided to give up her food bank spot, Malificiar said, the $45 voucher will allow her to buy groceries for two full weeks. "I live alone and a very simple life. I don't need that much, and... $45 is a really huge amount for groceries for me," she said. "A hamper from the Richmond Food Bank can feed a whole family so it's better for someone else to have it," Malificiar added. During her ongoing job search, she said being positive has helped her through the last few years. She believes it's important to focus on "life itself" rather than difficult life situations. "Sometimes I have to really choose my battles ... because I know (life) is really hard right now for everybody," said Malificiar. "As long as I am capable and I'm healthy, I can make things work. Sure, being out of a job for a few years is not ideal, but I am positive I can change the situation as long as I keep applying." Pictures make ideas real. And portraits make people real. Artist and photographer Dan Fleuette joins the Drill Down to describe how he creates art through personalities on the political right. A self-described “art school lunatic,” Fleuette was the artist that turned Peter Schweizer’s bestselling investigative book Clinton Cash into both a documentary and even a graphic novel. Fleuette just published a collection of his portraiture of important, often controversial figures from within the conservative movement. Rebels, Rogues, and Outlaws is a pictorial history of guests who have appeared on The War Room , a YouTube and Rumble video channel hosted by Steve Bannon. The book features portraits of Bannon, as well as people such as Rep. Lauren Boebert, Tulsi Gabbard, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Tucker Carlson, and Alex Jones. “Some of the people in your book are going to be in Donald Trump’s cabinet,” Schweizer says. “And some of them might go to jail.” “The underlying principle for the book is, really, a spirit of rebellion,” Fleuette explains. “They are called ‘outlaws’ in the book, but are they really? The book is an homage to them, to the spirit of people who refuse to bow down to political correctness.” Co-host Eric Eggers calls the book “high art in a conservative media space.” “It captures a different side of them,” Schweizer agrees. Making portraits has given Fleuette skill in humanizing his subjects and making them feel at ease, which he often found difficult with men who spent all day in the public eye who became reticent in front of the lens. “Some people allowed me to do some funky things, like RFK, Tucker Carlson, Tulsi Gabbard, and Lauren Boebert,” he says. “But the women were incredibly easy. Once they felt comfortable and trusted me, they opened up and blossomed. They will allow you to find levels that men won’t,” he observes. “Laura Loomer was a fun shoot,” he says. Fleuette has taken Peter Schweizer’s portrait as well, but it didn’t make the cut for the book. “Dan’s very good,” Schweizer recalls. “He makes people feel relaxed, and there’s a lot of trust involved when someone wants to shoot from below you, and that sort of thing.” Fleuette embraces the famous and sometimes infamous characters he often shoots for the show’s website. “Alex Jones was an interesting day,” he says, noting that Jones sat for him the day after Jones lost a court case that resulted in his being liable for millions of dollars to the families of Sandy Hook shooting victims he had slandered. “Alex Jones has a lot of enemies. But he also has a lot of friends, too. I try to capture not the controversy, but the spirit of the individual. He hates getting his portrait taken,” Fleuette says.
