STOCKTON — In a decision that officials have dubbed “historic,” voters have approved a bond measure that will upgrade decades-old classrooms and facilities at San Joaquin Delta College. Measure K, a $598 million bond that will fund a variety of renovations at the 50-year-old Stockton campus, has earned 58.5% of the vote as of the San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters’ Monday election night update. The measure needed 55% to pass. “We’re extremely grateful that voters recognized the importance of Delta College for supporting our local economy, training nurses and other skilled professionals who serve our community, and opening doors of opportunity in an affordable way,” superintendent and president Dr. Lisa Aguilera Lawrenson said. “Passage of Measure K will make a massive impact on the lives of thousands of families for decades into the future.” The measure garnered 132,527 votes in favor and 6,744 votes against in San Joaquin County, while receiving 90,490 votes against and 8,278 votes in favor in Sacramento County. According to the measure’s ballot text, it would levy $16 per $100,000 assessed property, generating $34,800,000 annually. With the rising cost of secondary education, officials said families are relying on Delta College to prepare students for careers that may double or triple their income right after graduation, or for transfer to four-year universities. Measure K will fund upgrades such as improving job training labs, classrooms and technology, upgrading network infrastructure, fixing leaky roofs, repairing or replacing old plumbing and wiring, and renovating aging classrooms and labs. Upgrades will occur as the college increases access throughout the county, which includes expanding classes and programs at Mountain House, Manteca, and Lodi. “This is a historic moment for Delta College and we cannot express strongly enough our thanks to community members for their support,” said Dr. Charles Jennings, Delta College Board of Trustees president. “We understand the trust you have placed in us, and we’re determined to do everything we can with these resources to lift up and support families and communities.” The college said accountability measures will be put in place to ensure taxpayer dollars are spent properly, which includes creating a Citizens Oversight Committee.
