’Twas the night before Christmas 2024 And across the land of the free and home of the brave The campaigning was over. Families and friends gathered Praying the other would behave. Campaign hats, buttons and signs were stashed away In hopes that their disappearance would inspire Talking in a courteous way. Article continues after... Cross|Word Flipart Typeshift SpellTower Really Bad Chess 45’s supporters, lawyers and future appointees Were all snug in their beds, While visions of a future wrought By “Agenda 25” and “Project 2025” Danced in their heads. Kamala’s supporters, donors, funders, and Democracy lovers awakened From their winter’s nap with a scream In their slumber they remembered 45 was elected 47 And they wished it was a bad dream. Across the land there arose such a clatter, Everyone sprang to their windows to see What was the matter. Before their wondering eyes appeared Leonard Leo leading Congregational Republicans, Christian Nationalists, White Supremacists, Heritage Foundation leaders, Federalist Society members, corporate moguls, and dark money campaign funders. Singing the praises of their fearless leader Who they pretend to revere. On social media they posted, “Our secret plan devised so long ago To replace liberal democracy With an authoritarian we control Is no longer a secret because Soon everyone will know. We found a promoter of chaos and constant lies, Who is without shame. A performer who fooled so many to believe Only he understood their pain. We won and you, Socialist liberals, LBGTQ+ and, DEI advocates and progressives lost. Now, us faux patriots will make you, and so Many unsuspecting citizens bear the cost. On Jan. 20, 2025, a new nation will arise. ‘Project 2025’ will be 47’s and his appointees’ guide. Soon it will only be men who determine women’s reproductive health, And make sure no women or minorities Take any white men’s jobs by stealth. More tax breaks for the wealthy. Fewer programs and funds for those in need Invoke the “Alien and Enemies Act” That will ensure we succeed. We, the super wealthy investors in 47’s kleptocracy will call the shots. If you resist, the FBI will find you, And 47’s Justice Department Will make sure you serve a sentence or two. We’ll do our best to close the Department of Education, And break up the FBI, NIH, FDIC, and the CDC. We’ll even try to privatize Medicare, Medicaid, USPS and Social Security. We’ll promote deregulation, Get rid of many unnecessary Federal bureaucratic jobs, And in their place put appointees Who have no knowledge, expertise or cogent thoughts. With threats, Musk and Ramaswamy will pitch DOGE For Republican legislators must be loyal like a dog. Suddenly, they fell silent For they heard a sound that crescendo And scared them as it seemed to surround. “Is this the ‘others’ who will try to disrupt our plans? Not possible, because our Supremes see things From our point of view Since we gave a few of them Lots of free trips and food. Slowly thousands of democracy champions emerged Singing freedom songs, and shouting “We will fight for democracy and our rights Now is the time to make ‘Good Trouble’ Don’t surrender our democracy without a fight. We will go to the courts, to Congress, Crisscross the highways and byways of this land. We will expose lies and propaganda By supporting the truth With science and observable facts. We will not become citizen somnambulists For our history tells us that The Republic was not created For just a few. Rich White Nationalists.” From some ethereal source, “Silent Night” Mysteriously floated through the air. Both crowds settled as the night sky, turned bright. When it ended, the Ghost of Christmas Future spoke, “Your democratic republic may survive The next four years if most of its citizens Exercise a judicious sense of what not to believe, And exercise their constitutional rights Most vigorously.” All departed and went their separate ways, Knowing tomorrow would be Christmas Day. The original TV series ran from 2006 to 2011, winning three Emmys over the five seasons. It was loosely based on Buzz Bissinger’s 1990 book that captured the socio-political climate of Odessa through the lens of a beloved high school football team: the Permian Panthers. The book was also adapted in a 2004 film starring Billy Bob Thornton as coach Gary Gaines. The TV show popularized the motivational phrase — “clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose” — uttered by coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler). Connie Britton and Dallas native Jesse Plemons were co-stars in the series. Showrunner Jason Katims is set to return for the new version, according to Variety. The upcoming project, which is still in the early stages, will focus on a new set of characters in the world of high school football. In a 2021 interview with "Entertainment Tonight," Britton said a reboot, particularly with the original cast members, seemed unlikely. “We’ve already had a movie, we’ve already had this TV show, and then if they were to do it again with like a whole different iteration of it, I don’t know. I would think that would be sort of odd.” Taylor Kitsch, who played football star Tim Riggins in the TV series, told Variety in 2022 he would not appear in any revival. “You may see it, but I will not be a part of it,” he said. “I’m done. I’m good. I want to keep growing as an actor. Going back to Rigs — let him live in everyone else’s memories. Whatever that is, whatever he means to them, let him lay there.” ©2024 The Dallas Morning News. Visit dallasnews.com . Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.jili777 login register

Campaigners called for voters to be given a say over who replaces Senedd politicians booted out of office for bad behaviour under a proposed system of recall. Jessica Blair, director of the Electoral Reform Society (ERS) Cymru, supported calls for a recall system to allow voters to remove misbehaving politicians between elections. But Ms Blair said voters should have a say over the replacement, warning an element of personal accountability will be lost with the Senedd’s new “closed-list” electoral system. From 2026, people will vote for parties rather than individuals as Wales ditches first past the post in favour of a full form of proportional representation, with no by-elections being held. Ms Blair said: “This idea of replacing someone with the next person on the list, it could be ... from the voters’ perspective ... seen as a party being rewarded for bad behaviour.” Giving evidence to the Senedd’s standards committee, she added: “This shouldn’t be necessarily about parties keeping control, it should be about voters having their say.” Labour’s Mick Antoniw pointed out it is the person, not the party, that has transgressed. But Ms Blair said: “That could also reflect badly on the party or the way a party’s handled it, so I don't think it's necessarily as clear cut, as this is one person’s actions.” She told the committee that three of the four UK Parliament by-elections triggered by recall petitions since 2019 were won by a different party. She said: “Parties can be punished for an individual’s bad behaviour or it could be a reflection of changing political support post election. There doesn’t seem to be a real case for retaining that party’s seat, especially three years after an election, for example.” The standards committee will make recommendations on how a recall mechanism should work in Wales as part of its inquiry on Senedd members’ accountability. Hannah Blythyn, who chairs the committee, asked witnesses whether the circumstances for recalling a Senedd member should be the same as Westminster. Ms Blair suggested the triggers – a custodial sentence of less than 12 months, a suspension of at least ten sitting days, or an expenses offence conviction – make a good starting point. So this is Christmas, and what have you done? Decked up your house, shopped enough and more for the family, sent invitations to friends for a sumptuous meal, laid out plans for merrymaking? Have you had the time to think about the ones who cannot afford to do all that? ’Tis the time to be jolly all right, but to care for the less privileged would make your Christmas just right. The popular festival falls in the northern hemisphere winter, which gives us the scope to reach out to those who are left in the cold, literally as well as figuratively. It enhances the spirit of giving to touch a life and perhaps make a huge difference. Charity tops the list in terms of contentment. Nothing beats the joy of brightening up someone's mood and making one smile. Little gestures of generosity help a great deal in achieving an enormous sense of satisfaction. That would mean you radiated brighter than that decorative star in your balcony, and were a fairy, just like the lights that glitter on your Christmas tree. Be someone’s Santa, especially this festive season. As Christians around the world celebrate the birth of ‘Prince of Peace’ Jesus Christ, peace is what the world desperately needs right now with nations raging against another — causing a ripple effect around Earth — in these troubled times. Congregations in packed churches would pray for the same today even as they reflect on reported outrage against Christ’s followers in scattered pockets of our great nation. Against this backdrop, it is heartening to note the changing political equation with the PM making the push to reach out to Christians across the country. It came as a shock then that Mr Modi’s outreach was seen by some as a way of the influential clergy of the Catholic Church to engage with power and thus legitimising in a way the persecution of Christians that continues to an alarming degree in some parts of the country where the push for Hindutva comes into conflict with the desire of the minority to live in peace and prosper along with the majority community. The minority must be seen and heard too. Mr Modi has made a move in this direction and has sent out an uplifting message of inclusiveness on that front. There’s still a long way to go, but a steady start has been made in earnest. It should finish well. That should warm the hearts of many this Christmas and with the New Year around the corner, we could turn the page. Indeed, the page must turn in a country where the situation with the minorities of two major religions is not as ideal as it should be. In fact, the larger Muslim community could be facing the same kind of persecution as the Christians through targeted violence, harassment and arrests and even ostracisation wherever majoritarianism prevails, according to citizens concerned by what they see as the domination of a few religious nationalist groups. The RSS chief’s recent statement regarding the need to stop the hunt for the ruins of a temple under every ancient mosque is significant. There is a need to stop the divisiveness that comes with such delving into history.
