TD Bank Group said Thursday (Dec. 5) that for the coming fiscal year, “it will be challenging for the Bank to generate earnings growth,” as it continues to work on its anti-money laundering (AML) remediation and invest in its business. The bank said this in an earnings release in which it reported that during its fourth quarter, which ended Oct. 31, the reported net income of its Canadian banking business rose 9% year over year, while that of its U.S. banking business fell 32%. “I remain confident in the earnings growth potential of our Canadian personal and commercial banking, wealth management, insurance and wholesale banking segments,” Chief Operating Officer Raymond Chun said Thursday during the bank’s quarterly earnings call. “And while we expect that the U.S. balance sheet restructuring and AML remediation will impact the U.S. retail segment, we remain committed to the U.S. market and confident in the strength of our franchise.” Several U.S. regulators and authorities announced Oct. 10 that TD Bank Group and some of its U.S. subsidiaries consented to orders and entered into plea agreements related to previously disclosed investigations of its Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and anti-money laundering (AML) programs. The No. 6 seed Wildcats looked more than capable of upsetting the No. 2 Mountaineers for a second straight season thanks to a dynamic offense led by quarterback Kennedy McGill. But costly turnovers and penalties plus some tough timely catches by Western Colorado receivers against a depleted secondary all combined to give Central a season-ending 28-21 loss. "They present some challenges," coach Chris Fisk said. "They’re kind of a 3-3 stack, 3-4 defense that brings pressure from all over. We gave up the same amount of sacks today (six) that we’d given up on the season." He said the first one on the opening drive happened due to the wrong protection call and it resulted in McGill losing a fumble, setting up a short Mountaineers touchdown drive. The Wildcats quickly answered thanks to big runs by Tyler Flanagan and McGill, who scored from a yard out. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George has a bone bruise on his left knee and will miss two games, the team said Thursday. The 76ers said George did not suffer any structural damage when he injured the same knee that he hyperextended during the preseason in Wednesday night's loss at Memphis. The game marked the first time this season the All-Star trio of George, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey started a game together. George will miss home games Friday against Brooklyn and Sunday against the Los Angeles Clippers, his former team. A nine-time All-Star, the 34-year-old George will be evaluated again on Monday. Wednesday's 117-111 loss to the Grizzlies dropped the Sixers to 2-12, the worst record in the NBA headed into Thursday night's games. (AP) — The man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare’s CEO struggled with deputies and shouted while being led into court Tuesday as new details emerged about his possible motivation behind the ambush. In his first public words since a five-day search ended with his arrest at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania, Luigi Nicholas Mangione emerged from a patrol car shouting about an “insult to the intelligence of the American people” while deputies pushed him inside a courthouse. The 26-year-old Ivy League graduate from a prominent Maryland real estate family is fighting attempts to extradite him to New York so that he can face a murder charge in the Manhattan killing of Brian Thompson , who led the United States’ largest medical insurance company. A law enforcement bulletin obtained by The Associated Press said that at the time of his arrest, Mangione was carrying a handwritten document expressing anger with what he called “parasitic” health insurance companies and a disdain for corporate greed and power. He wrote that the U.S. has the most expensive health care system in the world and that profits of major corporations continue to rise while “our life expectancy” does not, according to the bulletin. In social media posts, Mangione called “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski — who carried out a series of bombings while railing against modern society and technology — a “political revolutionary,” according to the police bulletin. Mangione remained jailed in Pennsylvania, where he was initially charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. Manhattan prosecutors were beginning to take steps to bring Mangione to New York, but at a brief hearing Tuesday, defense lawyer Thomas Dickey said his client will not waive extradition and instead wants a hearing on the issue. Mangione was denied bail after prosecutors said he was too dangerous to be released. He mostly stared straight ahead at the hearing, occasionally looking at papers, rocking in his chair or looking back at the gallery. At one point, he began to speak to respond to the court discussion but was quieted by his lawyer. “You can’t rush to judgment in this case or any case,” Dickey said afterward. “He’s presumed innocent. It also said, “I do apologize for any strife or traumas but it had to be done. From surveillance video, New York investigators determined the shooter quickly fled the city, likely by bus. Mangione was born into a life of country clubs and privilege. His grandfather was a self-made real estate developer and philanthropist. Valedictorian at his elite Baltimore prep school, he went on to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science in 2020 from the University of Pennsylvania, a spokesperson said. “Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest,” Mangione’s family said in a statement posted on social media late Monday by his cousin, Maryland Del.
